Sweet Little Babies

Sooo, I bet you weren’t expecting carrots!!
I’m going to hijack the blog for a moment to talk about my garden, primarily for the sake of my mother.

Wouldn’t you know that the first year I try to have a FL winter garden, we have record low temperatures in October and November? I had to cover almost everything tonight, since temperatures are supposed to be below 30. Anyway, we were talking about coffee grounds the other day, and I discovered how easy it is to get grounds from Starbucks. You just ask for grounds, and they go empty the machines into a bag and hand it to you :). My car smelled absolutely delicious for a couple of days until I could get them to their destination. I have been enjoying fresh collard greens, swiss chard, lettuce and broccoli leaves. The broccoli should head any time now – I am very eager to see it! I also have cabbage beginning to head and peas beginning to climb. The kale and leeks are still very small, but they are growing. The cilantro and parsley have been going crazy – need to cook more with them!!

Here is the grounds bag – supposedly black gold as an organic nitrogen source – and FREE!

Here are the carrots that I thinned out of the bed this evening. Aren’t they cute? They jumped into a stirfry and were yummy.

New Doll

Sarah and I took Aurelia to Target. We were walking past the toy aisles when all of a sudden, Aurelia seemed to get really upset and wanted out of Sarah’s arms. I told Sarah to go ahead and let her go to see what she would do. When Sarah put her down, Aurie ran back to the end of one of the aisles we passed and grabbed at a box with a doll in it. She may have signaled she wanted it too, I’m not sure, but next thing I know, she’s plopped down on the floor hugging a box with a doll in it. I looked at the price tag and said, $20 bucks…sure, she seems to want it bad enough, more so than the other toys I always want to get her, so we picked her and the box up and plopped her back into our cart. The boxed doll kept her entertained until we took it away to be scanned at the register. Here she is with her new doll…she no longer seems to care about her old “baby.”

Here are just a couple more adorable shots that I took before we went home. I just couldn’t help myself with such great light and big smiles!

Helping in the Garden

Mommy took Aurelia to the garden on Saturday morning while Daddy was doing some work. It was a little chilly, so she got to sport her new puffer vest. I gave her the cultivator to use, since it is the only tool without any sharp points, and she had a good time patting the plants with the flat end of it. I showed her how to rake with it, but that only occupied about 2 minutes of her attention. After exploring the garden behind me, she pulled up a couple of baby carrots, then tried to help me pick some lettuce and greens. She was so cute with her little tool!
This brief little trip was so sweet for me. I really felt like my heart was fluttering – I was that happy! I suppose it just really brings me joy to have my little girl outside with me, enjoying herself so much alongside me while I am doig something I enjoy. This is another one of those moments I will just tuck away and savor for rainy days to come.

Showing off her cultivator.

Inspecting the peas.

I found a big pretty leaf! Oh, and some flowers, too.

Looking like such a big girl in her jeans and vest.
