For those of you who see us on a regular basis and comment about how “petite”or “light as a feather”our little girl is,you are right! After a trip to the WIC office that included a consultation with their nutritionist,it is confirmed that Aurelia is underweight. She is barely on the chart for weight right now! This is such a big change from her chunky start and great leaps in growth that she was making prior to about 9 months of age. Now she is long and lean (about 85% percentile for height). Accounting for height and how active she is having learned to crawl efficiently and walk a bit on the early-side,the medical folks aren’t worried about her weight. It was still a bit surprising to hear that she is so light –my back doesn’t always agree.
There are also going to be some changes in her diet soon. I think I am going to introduce milk this weekend. There are several schools of thought about when to introduce milk. Formula-fed babies basically get an immediate switch once they cross the 1-year finish line. Breastfed babies may switch a bit more gradually, and there are those who think that they should wait as long as possible to avoid runny noses and other issues. Weighing ideas from both Eastern and Western schools of thought,I have decided to go ahead and introduce more dairy into her diet but to continue nursing as long as we both enjoy it,up to another year. I am also a little concerned about her protein intake, since she outright rejects almost any form of meat or beans that I’ve tried to feed her,so perhaps she will like this form.
Yeah, yeah,so I’m and obsessed first-time Mom,and I like to control things. I admit it! Feeding a toddler is quite difficult. I do what I can to put good stuff in front of her, then I sweep it up off of the floor afterward. What’s a Mom to do?
*Fun post with pictures next time!!
